You may not want to read this if you are in love with EFY music.
Okay. So this blog may get me into trouble. Just bear in mind that this is simply my own opinion, and if you are one that likes to listen to EFY music I do not think less of you. It has great messages and such.... but it just bugs me. You may say "Well YOU like video game music"... and I say "Well played, well played"... Anyways, this past Sunday it hit me just how much I despise EFY music. It makes me feel a little icky inside for some reason. And it fills my insides with violence. If you were to put me in a room with a pedophile, a baseball bat, and then play EFY music in the background, there just might not be anything left of said pedophile after 15 minutes. I don't quite know what it is, but I will explore some reasons now.
One thing that I have noticed about most EFY songs is they just say "Spiritual words" in no context at all. There was one playing that simply said "A little more faith, a little more strength, a little more love, a little more hope...." and on and on. It never said WHY there was more love or hope or strength... it just said words that are supposed to inspire you with those things since they said them to music. Arrrrrrrgll.
The next song that came on after that was 'God likes broken things'. All I can think about during this song is "I doubt that God LOVES broken things". He probably preferes things that don't have to break in the first place. It also makes me picture God purposely breaking things and making problems for everybody just for fun. Like a boy with a magnifine glass burning ants or something. Thats why I don't like that song. It puts apostasy into my mind.
I hope that these reasons give you a little insight to my dislike. Please let me know what you think of this.

HAHA! I have a certain distaste (hatred) for Mormon rock/pop music too. I do like Christian rock though. I know, weird. Probably because Skillet sounds like normal alternative music...anyway...
But I'm totally with you on EFY music...
You must take after your dad - he will NOT listen to Sunday Sounds on KSL for the 2 minute ride to Church. It seems to drive any hope of the Spirit away.
BUT you didn't finish the story! so he is upset with a couple of songs, then he changes it to classical renditions of Mega Man, Mario, and Final Fantasy. This is the stuff that drives me NUTSO.
I think silent Sundays may be the only compromise.
LIES. I changed it to classical music WITHOUT video game music yesterday. It was full of Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi. THAT is what annoyed Tiff.
Does EFY music encompass all cheesy LDS music? Surprisingly, I don't really have a hatred for it. I cannot and DO NOT listen to it, but I have an odd fascination with some of the songs. They are just so over-the-top cheesy and overly sentimental, that it's almost like a horrible accident I can't stop staring at.
When I was an impressionable teen, I let "Never a Better Hero" by Kenneth Cope into my life. I just listened to it on youtube. Wow, that takes me back. And I will be singing it the rest of the day. Thanks, Zak.
There are a couple of Afterglow songs that I have to sing along to if I hear them, in their crazily earnest vibrato. Then there's "Mrs. Mahoney" that Paul and I break into once in awhile, even though we can't remember the words. The two other MOST FASCINATING songs to me are: 1) "From God's arms, to my arms, to yours" - that adoption song, and 2) "I'll Build You a Rainbow" where the mom dies and ooooohhhh man. The parts where the guy talks. HA! I might need to listen to that again. That one makes me laugh.
This comment is getting too long, but one more thing. I went on a couple dates with this guy in college and he was really cute and nice and I liked him a lot, but one night he took me to some lady's basement where he kept this huge keyboard. It had a microphone attached to it, and he proceeded to sing me a song whilst playing said keyboard, with lyrics like, "It seems like we've known each other forever" and other cheesy things. I was horrified. Then he told me he did church firesides, and that's when I knew....um, this just isn't gonna work out.
#1 i would have been horrified too if i went on a date like mandi just explianed uuuggghhh and very disturbing
#2 i agree i dont like efy music or anything like that the only church cd i will listen to and enjoy is called prymarily for grown ups its primay sonngs jazzed up lenny gave it to me for my birthday right after he got home from his mission i dont listen to that very often other then that i listen to non church music on the way to church i have bbeen doing that since i got home from my mission
Interesting. Im surprised you would need EFY music to beat a pedophile...If I was ever in the room with a pedophile all I would need is the bat. (well played Christy, well played...)
Although I agree with what everyone has said about really cheesy church music, I will admit that some of my favorite songs are from EFY. One EFY song was actually on my wedding video. Peter Breinholt's What about (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meWzY2XDI1Q) Jon Schmidt on piano doesn't hurt - he is amazing.
Please don't allow silent Sundays to be the compromise. I always have to have music playing (it drives Leisy crazy sometimes). At least turn on MoTab - you can't go wrong with them.

Haaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaa. ZAK! You should tell us more things you dislike. That was hilarious. I was totally into Mormon pop in High School. I don't think I could stomach it now. I agree with Kent. Can't go wrong with MoTab. Unless they're doing crazy stuff. Let's say MoTab singing hymns. Yes.
Thanks for the hilarity. I miss you guys.
Zak:
Mom's comment was right on. If EFY is like Mormon pop, then I CAN'T STAND IT! I don't know what it is, but it just drives me crazy. How about Enya or some good old fashioned golf announcers for your Sunday listening? You can't go wrong with golf announcers, they'll put you in a reverent/sleepy mood every time. We've got some great conference CD of the choir that you could borrow. They sing REAL hymns that have meaning and substance.
blah blah blah. You are missing out on EFY music and mormon pop! I will always be grateful for the darned music because my macho man hubby loves it and sometimes that's all the inspiration that soaks in.
I made dad listen to a Michael McLean song once when I was first married. He was annoyed but I didn't catch on -(having an oblivious personality is sometimes funny). Now that I look back on it I'm a little embarrassed but even more amused. I'm sure dad secretly loved it. "Do you HEAR me? I can feel you near me, it is the answer I've been waiting for!"
